Shipping container transport in the UK

Vehicle you need

A sidelifter (or a hiab crane lorry) can self-load and place a container without a separate crane — the cheapest way to move one container to an awkward site.

Moving a 20ft or 40ft shipping container needs more than a flatbed. Unless the site has its own forklift or crane, you need a vehicle that can lift the container on and off itself.

A sidelifter lifts a container off its own chassis with hydraulic cranes and can place it precisely — ideal for gardens, yards and tight access. For shorter moves or lighter containers, a hiab crane lorry does the same job. Low-loaders and flatbeds work when there's lifting equipment at both ends.

Check ground access, overhead cables and the final resting position before booking. A good operator will ask about all three.
